Years ago,we were surprised to discover that North Carolina awarded 4 different high school diplomas. We evaluated a lot of National Science Foundation (NSF) grants that provided poor and minority kids with fabulous enrichment and rigorous experiences, and we’d see kids get offered scholarships they could not take because they had the wrong kind of high school diploma. The kids and their parents didn’t know there were different kinds. They got put on this path without understanding that was happening. One of the major differences between the diplomas was whether or not kids took 4 math classes. The diploma that prepared kids to meet Minimum Admission Requirements (MARs) for the 4-year colleges
